Ubuntu 26.04 already has a codename, and it's a determined beast

Ubuntu 26.04

If nothing strange happens, there will be a stable version of Ubuntu this Thursday . The mascot will have a very friendly face, and starting on the 10th, we'll start looking to the future. Although, well, Canonical already seems to be looking to that future, because it has published the codename that Ubuntu 26.04 will use , its next LTS version. It should be noted that it hasn't officially announced this, but it has been published on social networks as X.

If it were April 1st, April Fool's Day in English-speaking countries, I'd be more skeptical. But today, October 6th, I see no reason why Canonical could be joking. Besides, we're in the week of the Questing Quokka launch, and the timing doesn't stop fitting, even if it's a bit surprising. With all this in mind, the codename will be Resolute Racoon .

Ubuntu 26.04 Resolute Racoon

In other cases, such as the quokka, which is also called that in Spanish, it's a little harder to know what animal it is. In this case, a "racoon" is a raccoon, easily recognizable in an image like the one at the top of this article ( taken from Wikipedia, by the way ). They are friendly animals that appear in some videos shared on social media. The adjective, "Resolute," is where we can interpret it a little further.

"Resolute" in English is usually translated as "resolved," which the RAE defines as "Too determined, bold, daring, and free." Another option is "resolutive," which means, in this context, "One who attempts to resolve, or resolves, any matter or problem effectively, quickly, and decisively" or "determined, energetic, bold, daring, bold, brave, dynamic." I prefer the first option of "resolutive" better, but it seems that the first would be more commonly used in English. Therefore, the Ubuntu 26.04 mascot will be a "resolute raccoon."

This Thursday, Ubuntu 25.10 will be released, and later, work on Resolute Racoon will begin, as long as it's confirmed as the official codename. Development will begin soon, and we'll know the release date, which will be in April 2026.
