giFT plugin for Ares P2P network.

giFT-Ares is a plugin for giFT that connects to the Ares peer-to-peer filesharing network. Here you can find last (2010.11.23) working packages for Ubuntu GNU/Linux distributions.

giFT filesharing system is a modular daemon capable of abstracting the communication between the end user and specific filesharing protocols (peer-to-peer or otherwise). The giFT project differs from many other similar projects in that it is a distribution of a standalone platform-independent daemon, a library for client/frontend development, and modules for their own homegrown network, OpenFT, as well as the existing Gnutella network.

Apollon is a graphical frontend (KDE-based) to the giFT file-sharing system. It allows the user to perform searches and control downloads and uploads. Apollon needs a giFT daemon to be useful.

Apollon has many fine features such as file preview, multi-tabbed searching, filtering of search results, docking in the KDE/GNOME system tray, and downloading of entire remote directories.

Here we provide last packages from old Ubuntu versions.

giftoxic

gifTui is a graphical user interface to the giFT filesharing system. Its features are: multiple "browse user" and search tabs, network status, control uploads/downloads.

giFToxic is a simple and good-looking front-end (GTK2) to the giFT filesharing system. It allows the user to perform searches and control downloads and uploads. It needs a giFT daemon to connect to, which usually runs on the same computer as itself.

Ares is a free open source file sharing program that enables users to share any digital file including images, audio, video, software, documents, etc. BUT it's originally written only for MS-Windows.

You may now easily publish your files through the Ares peer to peer network. As a member of the virtual community, you can search and download just about any file shared by other users.

Software and network requirements.

  • Operating system: This plugin has been tested on Ubuntu versions: 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex), 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope), 9.10 (Karmic Koala), 10.04 (Lucid Lynx), 10.10 (Maverick Meerkat). May work on other Debian-based distributions and Ubuntu versions.
  • Desktop application: You can use graphical interfaces such as giFTui, Apollon or giFToxic. These kind of applications connect to a running giftd daemon (which can be using this Ares plugin)
  • Firewall / router: You need to open some TCP port and forward it to the computer runs giftd daemon. Default one specified in ~/.giFT/Ares/Ares.conf is 59049, but any other open works.

Installing giFT-Ares.

  • Graphical desktop: You can open the .deb package, and it's expected to be open with some package installer such as gdebi. After this, you can install also a graphical frontend (UI) such as giFTui, Apollon or giFToxic.
  • Console/Terminal: dpkg -i thepackage.deb (you will need to install dependencies before)
  • Compiling: You may need to do it if you have other architectures or want to set different dependencies for your distribution:
    1. You may need compiler tools, such as automake autoconf libtool build-essential checkinstall
    2. Download last .tar.gz package from the official website.
  • Unpack it. Example: tar zxf gift-ares-0.3.0.tar.gz
  • Enter to the extracted directory. Example: cd gift-ares-0.3.0
  • You can update the nodes data into the data/nodes file.
  • Execute: ./configure
  • Look the version with: cat Makefile | grep "^PACKAGE_VERSION = "
  • Execute: make
  • Execute: checkinstall -D --fstrans --default --reset-uids --pakdir=../ --pkgname="gift-ares" --pkgversion={ThePackageVersion} --install=no make install
  • Obsolete nodes: If provided here becomes obsolete (your client doesn't connect), you can replace your file ~/.giFT/Ares/nodes by the SNodes.dat provided by an Ares Galaxy installation or this other project.
