Raspberry pi zero 2w and the weather forecast: the brilliant idea of a maker

Joe Wreford hid a small Raspberry Pi Zero 2W in a special container to create a Desktop Weather Kit . By clicking a button you can request weather forecasts up to 48 hours away.

The idea is as nice as it is brilliant. Joe believes this project is perfect for makers of all ages. The Weather Kit is made up of five 3D printed parts that fit together easily, the coding is simple, and the wiring is minimal.

How does it work?

A Python script running on Raspberry Pi Zero W extracts weather data for the set location and automatically updates the display to show the forecast. Weather forecasts are made thanks to the free OpenWeatherMap API , which allows you to obtain specific location-based data.

Two servo motors, connected to the Raspberry Pi Zero, power the "time hands", which move based on the meteorological data retrieved from the script. The button allows you to scroll the hands to request the current weather conditions or the forecast for the next 3 hours, 6 hours, 12 hours, 24 hours or 48 hours.

Components

Below is a list of the components needed to carry out the project:

  • Raspberry Pi Zero W or Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W (the latter is recommended because it is a little faster)
  • Micro SD card and Micro USB cable
  • 3D printed case
  • SG90 servo motors
  • One button
  • Cavetteria

The parts to print are available on GitHub . If you don't have the possibility to print in 3D you can purchase the ready-made kit in different colours, obviously the Raspberry is not included. The price of the kit is £26.00 . Joe has written a very detailed guide on how to proceed to get to the final result: you can find it here .

In short, a nice idea that you can copy or from which you can take inspiration to create something different: the only limit is your imagination!
