Mozilla Thunderbird ISP Configuration Settings: Hotmail.

thunderbirdThunderbird can be used as a client for a Hotmail email account. Thunderbird will download messages from the Hotmail server and store them on your local system. Similarly, Thunderbird can be used to compose messages which are sent through Hotmail's mail servers. You can still use Hotmail's web-based application - Thunderbird will query the server and synchronize messages.

Hotmail accounts can be configured in Thunderbird Automatic Account Configuration. This page has instructions on how to manually Configure an account or modify an existing account.

1. Access the account settings by selecting Tools | Account Settings.... Select your Hotmail account from the list on the left. Make sure your name and account are correctly specified on the Default Identity page. bb711f255616de24ea24a383a7842e81-1267504089-702-1.jpg
2. Configure the Server Settings page as follows:
  • Server name: pop3.live.com
  • Port: 995
  • Username: your username (for example "acctjen@hotmail.com")
  • Connection security: SSL/TLS
  • Authentication Method: Normal Password
  • Uncheck Use secure authentication
Configure the rest of the server settings according to your preferences.

3. Configure the outgoing server by selecting Outgoing Server (SMTP) at the bottom of the server list on the left. The outgoing server will probably be called "Microsoft Live Hotmail" or something similar. Select the server and click Edit to alter the settings. Configure as follows:
  • Server Name:smtp.live.com
  • Port: 587
  • Check Use name and password
  • Username: your username (for example "acctjen@hotmail.com")
  • Uncheck Use secure authentication
  • Connection Security: STARTTLS
  • Authentication Method: Normal Password
