Kdenlive (KDE Non-Linear Video Editor) Manual: Introduction, Features & Installation.

Kdenlive is an acronym for KDE Non-Linear Video Editor.

Kdenlive is a free and open-source video editing software based on the MLT Framework, KDE and Qt.

The project was started by Jason Wood in 2002, and is now maintained by a small team of developers.[

With the release of Kdenlive 15.04.0 it became part of the official KDE project.

Kdenlive packages are freely available for Linux, FreeBSD, and Microsoft Windows, and the source code is available under the terms of GNU General Public License version 2 or any later version.

Non-linear video editing is much more powerful than beginners' (linear) editors, hence it requires a bit more organization before starting. However, it is not reserved to specialists and can be used for small personal projects.



Through the MLT framework, Kdenlive integrates many plugin effects for video and sound processing or creation. Furthermore Kdenlive brings a powerful titling tool, a DVD authoring (menus) solution, and can then be used as a complete studio for video creation.

Effects and transitions can be used with ease, and you can even create some wipe transitions of your own!

Simple tools for easy creation of color clips, text clips and image clips.

Automatic slideshows creation from pictures directories, with crossfade transitions among the images
Configurable keyboard shortcuts and interface layouts and much more!
Kdenlive's application-wide persistent settings are stored in the following locations, depending on your platform.

GNU/Linux.


~/.config/kdenliverc : contains the general settings of the application. Delete this and restart kdenlive to reset the application to "factory" settings
~/.config/session/kdenlive_104534dcfdb61d887154xxxxxxxxxxx_154yyyyyy_98zzzz : temporary session info
~/.cache/kdenlive
~/.local/share/kdenlive : lumas folder inside here contains the files used for Wipes
~/.local/share/stalefiles/kdenlive

  1. I consider this software to be used in the field of film and film filming of the professional profession, starting from the subject matter, including video clip of various formats, photography and immagini archiving in photographic format.

    1. @Giampaolo Rossi.-Tto fully enjoy Kdenlive's latest cry we must have the Linux operating system: I don't say to do like me, I haven't used Windows for years, but at least we install Linux next to Windows on our computer or put it on a USB stick.
