Tails Guide: system requirements, features, download, install and included software.

Tails or The Amnesic Incognito Live System is a security-focused Debian-based Linux distribution aimed at preserving privacy and anonymity.

All its incoming and outgoing connections are forced to go through Tor, nd any and all non-anonymous connections are blocked.

The system is designed to be booted as a live DVD or live USB, and will leave no digital footprint on the machine unless explicitly told to do so.

The Tor Project has provided financial support for its development.

Tails Guide: system requirements and features and included software.

Tails was first released on 23 June 2009. It is the next iteration of development on Incognito, a Gentoo-based Linux distribution. The Tor Project has provided financial support for its development.

Tails has also received funding from the Debian Project, Mozilla, and the Freedom of the Press Foundation.

Laura Poitras, Glenn Greenwald, and Barton Gellman have each said that Tails was an important tool they used in their work with National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden.

As of release 3.0, Tails requires a 64-bit processor to run.

System requirements.

Tails works on most reasonably recent computers, say manufactured after 2008. Here is a detailed list of requirements:
Either an internal or external DVD reader or the possibility to boot from a USB stick.
Tails requires a 64-bit x86-64 compatible processor: IBM PC compatible and others but not PowerPC nor ARM. Mac computers are IBM PC compatible since 2006. Tails does not run on most tablets and phones.
2 GB of RAM to work smoothly. Tails is known to work with less memory but you might experience strange behaviours or crashes.

Tails is based on Debian 9 (Stretch).

  1. It seems that this operating system has a series of bugs that allow user deanonymization. At least that says Exodus Intelligence, a security company.
In fact they say that even the latest version of Tails, with version 1.1 identifier is vulnerable to the exploit developed by them. However, they also indicate that they will not release it until the development team has corrected the vulnerabilities.

    1. @Giampaolo Rossi.- According to the development team, Tails is an operating system consisting of a lot of software and very diverse (from a kernel to a desktop environment, through many intermediate tools), and it is normal for security breaches to appear from time to time.
We remember the maximum of computer security: no system is completely secure if it is not turned off and locked, and all are potentially vulnerable.
