As it turns out, open-source products push the majority of websites on the internet today.

Below are some fast facts about open-source products and the web infrastructure:
  • Approximately 60% of all web servers operate Linux. Only 27% of web servers are Microsoft.
  • Apache web server has an approximate 60% market share (2011).
  • If you factor in lighttpd and nginx, the number increases to approximately 68.3%
  • Approximately 75% of the web uses PHP, with only 23.1% using ASP.Net. I suspect governments are the large percentage of ASP clients
